Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is a magnetic method of non-destructive testing that is used to detect corrosion, pitting and wall loss.
A common mode of failure is leakage through the floor, damaging the tank foundation which leads to instability possibly resulting in catastrophic failure. The most common technology used to inspect bottom plates for corrosion is magnetic flux leakage (MFL) because of its sensitivity to volumetric variations. MFL uses a strong magnet to induce a magnetic field in the bottom plate. When it encounters corrosion of a certain size, the magnetic field “leaks”. Greater the volumetric loss the greater the leakage. This flux leakage is detected by a combination of several types of sensors.
Merits of MFL Tank Floor Inspection
MFL covers the entire area of tank bottom not only random readings as conventional methods.
Determining Corrosion Growth Accurately and Reliably.
High Inspection Rates saves time and reduces cost.
Maximum coverage, including critical zone.
MFL Inspection reduces the risk of tank or pipeline failure.
